Blackpool Football Club, known variously as the ‘Seasiders’, the ‘Pool’ or the ‘Tangerines’, has a long and fascinating history, and was founded on 26 July 1887. The club were founding members of the Lancashire football league and won the championship in 1893-94.
Blackpool FC have had varying success over the years, but have some incredible high points to remember, including just before the second World War was declared on 3 September 1939, when they were at the top of Division One. Their most successful period was the 1950s when they had four top six finishes in the First Division, and reached the final of the FA Cup 3 times, before finally winning it in 1953 against Bolton Wanderers, coming back to win 4-3 after being 1–3 down.
Their lowest point came in 1982-83, when they were 21st in the football league’s lowest tier, but throughout the years, they’ve had plenty of wins to celebrate, with a trip or two to the Premier League, something which their nearest rivals, Preston North End, have yet to manage.
The team have been based at Bloomfield Road since 1901, and over the years some amazing improvements have been made to the grounds, including a new East Stand and a new South Stand, known as the Armfield Stand, in 2010, and in 2011-2012’s season, the Armfield Stand acquired a further 500 seats, and our very own Blackpool FC Hotel, which has been giving a warm welcome to guests since June 2012, with its official opening on the Club’s 125th anniversary, 26th July 2012.
